Simi Scoop – June 19 – June 22 | Who Will Be the Chili Champ?

Your guide to live music, local events, and where to be this weekend in Simi.

Where Simi Valley Locals stay in the know. No fluff.

Good morning, Simi Valley!

The sun is out. Chili pots are heating up. And somewhere in Texas Tract, someone’s trying to sell a vintage George Foreman grill for $2.

In today’s Simi Scoop:

  • Garage Sale Glory (my favorite op-ed yet)

  • Chili, Cars & Summer Vibes

  • Waste Bin Fines (yep, that’s a thing now)

  • A new BBQ spot you haven’t heard of (but need to try)

  • And a stacked weekend of Simi events, music, and fun

Let’s jump in.

Main Scoops:

🛍️ Garage Sale Glory: Texas Tract Is the Super Bowl of Simi Saturdays
By the Editor

I’ve loved garage sales for as long as I can remember. Growing up in Simi, Saturdays meant cruising LA Ave and Cochran, scanning for neon signs with eight bucks in my pocket and a dream of scoring a shoebox full of dusty Topps baseball cards.

After all these years, one thing’s clear: Texas Tract Garage Sale Day is king.

This neighborhood turns a casual sale day into a full-blown community event — 100+ homes, great energy, and even better deals. Parking’s tricky, but lace up your sneakers and come ready to walk (and bargain).

I’ll be out there this weekend — this time with my kids in tow — hoping to pass down the thrill of the hunt. See you there!

Starts at 7:00 AM | 2800 Texas Ave., Simi Valley, CA 93063
Take the 118, exit Stearns, head north, and follow the signs.

Year 36: Chili, Cars & a Simi Summer Tradition

There may be a shortage of Tums at Walgreens in Simi this week, as The Knights of Columbus are hosting their famous Chili Cook-Off and Car Show this Saturday, June 21 at St. Rose of Lima. This is a great Simi Valley tradition and a can’t-miss event!

Expect 100+ of SoCal’s finest classic cars, a whole lotta chili to sample, vendor booths, bounce houses, live music and even a petting zoo. Plenty for the whole family to enjoy. It’s the perfect mix of horsepower and hot sauce.

Saturday 10 AM to 4 PM — mark your calendar, bring the crew, and come hungry.

🍴 The Weekly Crave

Tapo Street BBQ – New Spot Alert!

Sponsored

2355 Tapo Street, Unit 12 (Big red “BARBECUE” sign behind Tapo McDonalds, can’t miss it)

Tapo Street BBQ just had its soft launch on Friday the 13th — I swung by as a Father’s Day treat to myself on Sunday and left with a grin.

Chef Tony served me up 4 fall-off-the-bone pork ribs smoked to perfection, mac salad, baked beans, and a drink — all for just $16. That’s a steal for real-deal BBQ. Generous portions too, they could barely close my to-go container — it was so packed.

They’ve got a limited menu for now, but if you’re a BBQ lover, this place should be your next food mission. Hot tip: go hungry.

Civic News:

🗑️Waste Bin Fines Are Here

Heads up, Simi Valley — you can now be fined for putting the wrong stuff in your recycling or organics bins.

Waste Management trucks are using onboard cameras to monitor what’s in your bins as they’re emptied, and violations could cost you — starting at $50 and climbing to $250 for repeat offenses.

This comes from state law SB 1383, which requires cities to cut down on landfill waste. So remember:

  • Food scraps + yard clippings → organics bin

  • Clean recyclables like cans + paper → recycling bin

  • No plastic bags in recycling

  • No food or wrappers in the wrong cart

The city is still giving warnings and education for first-time mistakes, but enforcement is officially active. Check what goes where at simivalley.org and dodge a surprise on your next bill.
